Arrived at the lake at 11:30 AM and started out wind drifting down the lake with a sinking line and a black Woolly Bugger. Shortly after launching, I had a strike, which didn't hook-up, and for the next 7 hours, the only action I had was changing the fly to another pattern or switching from my sinking line to my floating line.
Pass lake this year has been quite different than it was last year. Fly patterns and locations which seemed to be productive last year have come up empty this year.
Last year I had numerous days of double digit catches while this year the best day I had thusfar was a catch of 8 fish.
The past 2 weeks, there has been some sort of hatch persistant on the lake and at various locations you'll find large numbers of fish finning the surface feeding on something just below the surface which totally eludes me. Last night for instance there must have been 100 fish on the shallow corner just boiling the surface and for almost 1 1/2 hours casting to them produced 1 hook-up briefly. The only thing I didn't throw at them was my lunch.
If you have the patience to hang on till darkness approaches, there is a short hatch which starts about 9:00 PM and last approx. 30 minutes. During this period I managed to catch my only fish for the day. Hopefully, things will improve in a month or 2 when the temperature of the water begins to get colder.
