I finally loaded up my boat and took it down to the port of Everett boat launch and headed upriver. The ospreys were everywhere and I lost count at 30 seals. I saw my first humpy surface by the I-5 bridge so I tried a few casts with no luck. Mostly I wanted to explore today so I headed up past Lowell and Norwegian Bay before chasing a few surfacing fish under the power lines.
I wasn't paying much attention when I felt a light weight on the end of my line. Well the light weight all of a sudden got heavy as my reel sang as line striped and the fish that took my pink jig headed downriver like you wouldn't believe. Wow this was a huge humpy. I fought and fought as I realized geez I had made the cast using my trout rod and not my heavier one. This guy circled my boat multiple times as I clumsily entertained the fisherman on the shore. I bent over and reached for the net and ... great.... it was my small trout net. It just wasn't my day I guess. Anyway the huge humpy finally dove one more time and up came my jig which had a hook bent like a safety pin.
I wasn't too disappointed as that was a fun fight. He looked to be about 8 pounds and a nice bright fish. I had a couple more bites but no fish so I enjoyed the outdoors and took a bunch of photos along the way back.

Now I need to get the right net in the boat and find some heavier jigs. Good news, the humpies might be big ones this year just like four years ago. Two years ago they were pretty small and hard to find. It's tough to get old and senile. Ha.

Really, a five lb Humpy straitened your hook? I have caught 25 lb Steelhead and 50 + lb King Salmon and never had a hook straightened. Humpies are fun, but I cant imagine a Humpy doing That.

He was more like about 8 pounds. Yep a standard 1/4 oz pink jig and it was bent open like a safety pin. Very unusual. So today I upgraded and bought some jigs with gamakatsu hooks. I've had a few hooks straightened by Northern Pike and Muskies before but not a humpy.
