Finally got some cloud cover so I was on the water by 10am. Nothing at the condo weed patch. Nothing at my other weed patch. Too windy, I guess, for the Whopper Plopper, but the tube & spinnerbait didn't work either. Decided to go fish a man-made reef I found off a dock. Wind was right so I drifted a Carolina Rig with a craw. Picked up a dink smallmouth. Nothing but bluegill and dink perch biting at the reef, so I decided to go troll the mouth of Issy Creek for cutthroats.

Marked tons of fish in 40-50 FOW but no hits in 4 passes. Decided to hit my SpotLock over a big group of marked fish close to the bottom. I assumed they were perch being that deep, and that maybe I could salvage a crappy day by at least having a perch-fry. I put half a crawler on a drop shot rig and started getting bit immediately. First fish was a perch, then I was surprised to start pulling up trout. Action wasn't fast or furious by any means but I stayed for a few hours, having the spot all to myself except for the waders in the creek mouth.

Pulling fish up from 50 ft must cause some serious barotrauma, because several of the Peamouths I released came back to the surface and ended up as eagle snacks. Those things look a lot like what we used to call Chubs in the midwest. Absolutely delicious smoked. Does anyone here smoke their peamouths? I might just have to try that. Seems like too nice a fish to be feeding to the birds. Sure as hell plentiful enough!

Anyway, ended up with 2 perch, 2 cuts, and a rainbow (which I had assumed was a cut until I saw the rounded tail lobes). So I checked under the chin for cut marks and nothing. Sure has different coloring than the cuts, too. Tell me if I'm wrong, but compare those tails first. Way different from the cuts.

Perch & eggs for breakfast, and trout on the smoker later this afternoon. Starting to really like this lake...

Yeah, I marked a bunch of fish on the Northeast part of the lake also. Picked up two cutts at 42 feet with a DR, but both 12 inches, so let them go. Saw lots of fish in some areas, so we just parked it and jigged in the middle of them. Using the sonar, I put it right in them. A peamouth immediately, so we left and went into shore. Picked up my biggest cut ever just off some docks in 20 fow. Quite the fighter with good aerials. Also some bass and of course perch. If you want perch, just go to about 15 to 20 feet and when you see a school, just throw small jigs such as trout magnet or a piece of worm. Take lots -please! Tasty, but too many. I would say a rainbow also.

The book "Inland Fishes of Washington" by Wydoski and Whitney says that they have quite a few bones but are of fine flavor. There was a commercial fishery for them years ago & restaurants featured them. I'm thinkin' smoked would be as good as Whitefish, smoked and canned would break down the bones.....
