Al and I ventured to Potholes this morning hoping to ambush some trout or walleyes. We had 3 sizes of flickershads in the water by 5:30 AM. We trolled off the west side in 20-24 FOW and had a small trout on within 5 minutes. 15 minutes later the rod off the planer board violently snapped off quickly followed by a lunker trout going a aerial 120 feet behind the boat. He made 2 more leaps at least 2 feet out of the water before finally being netted. Wt 4.2 lbs and quickly released. 30 minutes later Al's rod doubled over. After a minute of not moving his hookup he announced that he thought he had a log then his rod started bouncing. A few minutes later he had a huge walleye along side the boat. Unfortunately I was slow on the net as I admired the fish in the water. As I went to scoop it in it became unhooked. We would have released it anyway but a picture of Al's personal best would have been nice.
Over the next 2 hours we had 5 more big trout hookup, go aerial and then auto release. Landed 1 more RBT that was 3+ lbs then the bite totally disappeared after 9:30. Deep diving flickershad in black/silver got the most hits. Speed 2.5 MPH. Water temp 74-77. Made a pass along Medicare Beach with no luck. It was certainly a fun morning on the water even though we lost those big fish!
