The annual halibut attempt.
A foggy morning resulted in a slow trip out to Eastern Bank. Aside from the fog, the conditions were really pleasant. We decided to try anchoring this year and the conditions made that simple. We anchored up on top of the bank in an area we'd seen others have success. Dropped lines at 7am using herring, squid, and salmon bellies. Spent over four hours and didn't have a bite. After the fog lifted we could see the other boats around us and were not seeing action from any of those either. After the tide change we pulled anchor and tried drifting off the edge of the bank a few times which resulted in a small sculpin. Then we anchored back up on the top edge of the bank without any result. Finally pulled the pick and headed to Partridge to end the day. Made a few drifts there without any hits before the storm came in. We saw it coming, so headed back at 4pm. Got to Deception just before the rain, but along with every other boat that was also hightailing it in. The launch was a zoo, so tied up to one of the rafts in the harbor and watched the lightning show and boats line up. Glad we had a cabin to stay dry in. By the time the launch cleared, the weather was also clearing. No fish, but a good day on the water despite.
