Yet another tale in the ongoing saga of the voyages of the Tin Guppy.
Well we got on the water and got the got fish in the boat to start of the year, that's the good news. The bad news is the fishing over the 3 day period of Thursday afternoon to Saturday at noon is it can be summed up in one word, SLOW. Had big plans of course to really slay them, thought my timing was pretty good but alas, another plan gone astray. Tried a bunch of stuff, different speeds, different depths, covered a lot of water from Spring Canyon to the lower part of Keller and just couldn't manage many bites. Put 9 Rainbows in the boat, released 2 Red Bands and missed 2 strikes and that was the whole show. My friend Jim and I fished 3 rods the entire time, 2 leaded lines and one braided on the downrigger and just couldn't really seem to find them. The only place we had any consistent hits was up near Keller where we got 4 hits on 4 passes over one spot. The interesting part was almost all the fish came on the same rod and the same beat to death Kekeda fly that has a bent main hook, one hook missing from the treble stinger and a fair amount of hair missing. Something about that rod and that lure that seems to work well together. We put other orange Kekedas on the other rods, tried to match the dodgers, nothing worked as well. You can't convince me that these fish aren't picky. Talked to a few people that had a Koke or two but didn't run into anyone that had really cleaned up. Did notice that the wild trout fought much better. Well it was still good to get out and enjoy Roosevelt with the hills covered with snow.
Next Time!

Way to give it a go Part-Time. It's always amazing how well a beat up fly can work. Glad to hear you got out and ushered in a new year of fishing. Better days are coming, keep on keeping on - Alan

Hey Part-Time," big plans to really slay them" is what keeps us all coming back.Sorry to hear how slow it was for you. But, I thank you for the report as I have not been able to hit it this year yet. Andy

Way to stick it out Part-Time. I had had the exact same experience as you with beat to death Kekeda flies, they just keep catching, and sometimes seem to work better. Crazy, I know, but that's happened to us over the past couple years so know it is a reality. Fishing may have been slow, but what a great place to be if the fishing isn't fast and furious. :-)

Thanks for sharing the report. Phil said it well, great place to be out fishing even if the catching isn't hot. Great pictures, thanks for sharing and using the flies.
