Yet another tale from the voyages of the Tin Guppy,

Well things finally worked out to do something I have wanted to do since I got the Guppy 2 years ago. We were able to get the trailer and the boat down to Roosevelt and spend 4 days at the Keller NPS campground . Marcia and I fished together on Friday above the ferry and were able to both get our limits on what was a pretty decent day weather wise. Mostly 14" to 15" with a couple of 17", not a bad day at all. Marcia had to go home to attend some duties at church so I was solo on Saturday. After a leisurely start I was able to put 5 in the boat below Keller by 12:30, Had a few long line releases as I was trying to figure out my system of landing fish and handling the boat by myself but it was a fun problem to solve. Dropped down to the basin to try for some walleye but couldn't get the boat slowed down enough either direction to run a bottom bouncer effectively, truthfully just feeling too lazy to put in any real effort. Sunday morning was pretty slow at first so I finally broke from my usual mode of running dodgers ahead of my Kekeda flies and pink hoochie that had been serving me faithfully and just ran the flies and went from my normal speed of 1.3 to 1.7 and took it up to 2.7. Instant results! Started getting hits right away. Put 3 fish in the boat in just over 30 minutes the last being a nice 20" bow that weighed 2.6 lbs. Had met Slick Foot Gary from the Portland Polar Bear club who says no real fishing trip is off to a good start without a bit of a swim first. More interestingly he had caught a couple of Kokanee the day before so I headed over to where he was and put the Arrow dodger and the pink hoochie back on and managed a really nice 20" Kokanee that went 3.2 lbs. You would have thought he was a college kid from the late 60s they way he protested joining me in boat but I was finally able to make him see my point of view. When Marcia got back we went out in the afternoon and got her limit of Bows going back to the flies and the faster trolling speed. Big thanks to Hewsfisher and downriggeral for the tips on the speed. The orange Kekeda was the big producer followed closely by the Pink Gisha Hoochie. Guess that will be the last trip of the season for the trailer but the first trip for the fall/winter Kokanee.

Lets get out there and get it done, it's the right thing to do.

pulling the flys, were you on a down rigger or flat lining?

So glad to see your report and a beauty of a kokanee too! Don't know what he was using to pull flies (suspect leadcore) but I pull them behind about 3 1/2 colors leadcore and 50' 6lb fluorocarbon leader. :-)

Looks like you had fun for sure. Three color lead core is the ticket for me followed up by 50' 12# fluorocarbon. How deep did you get the koke?

On Friday when we were fishing together I ran a fly on braided line behind a downrigger but for whatever reason it only accounted for a couple of fish. Most of the fish were caught with leaded line followed by 50 ft of mono leader and then whatever leader that happens to be on the fly or hoochie that I am pulling, usually 12LB fluorocarbon, the Seaguar Red Label. I had a bunch of trouble with leaders my first season and this is the only fluorocarbon I trust anymore. I have some left and it works otherwise I would probably just give up with fluorocarbon. What really struck me as odd was when I ran the flies naked with out the dodger I was running an Orange Kekeda and a Perch Kekeda and all hits were on the Orange. Hard to believe they would hit one so aggressively and not the other. Caught the Koke with a Pink Gisha about a foot behind a Hot Pink Arrow Fast flasher, always been a good producer for us. http://p-line.com/soft-baits/geisha-squids.
I usually am from 135 to 175 ft behind the boad, haven't ever tried a planer board.

Glad you were able to spend some time down with the trailer and stay for a few days. Staying overnight is always a favorite of ours. Happy to see the flies getting the job done for you. Thanks for the report, great job out there! Dave

This is 'Slick foot Gary', great to meet you the other day, not the best of circumstances as far as pride goes. All is good the ends good. Hope to get back after them again soon. gary

Samntrllr Huh? Guess that does have a better ring to it than "Slick Foot". Was good to meet you and appreciate you tips, probably wouldn't ha caught a Kokanee that trip with out your input. Hope to run into you again. I doubt Michal Phelps could have handled that swim more gracefully.
