Headed out on a foggy Saturday morning from the Porcupine Bay launch looking for some walleyes. My buddy and I headed up river to the area around the first buoy and jigged the river channel edge from 35'-55' FOW. We picked up a bunch a dink walleyes (10-12 inches) on jigs; the fish were actually hitting our jigs as we hesitated at the top of our upward motion. This pattern held up throughout the day as we moved up river to a couple of other places we normally fish this time of year. The shallowest we caught anything was 38' FOW so it would appear the fish are mostly in their winter holding areas. We caught 6 Burbot on jigs as well. they must be starting their move up river in anticipation of the spawn. Red and black jig heads with any kind of 3-5 inch green plastic worm worked the best for us. I caught the two best eyes for the day, a 16 and a 21 inch; they were the only ones worth keeping but not enough to warrant the time of cleaning them so they got a free ride for most of the day before being set free. The total number eyes was 62, as I said earlier a dink fest but a lot more action then we had last weekend at Potholes. The water temp was 54 degrees and surprisingly the river was pretty clear, we were expecting it to be pretty stained with the record amount of rain we have been having.

Thanx for the report, Thinking about giving those Burbot a try. I have never actually Targeted them.

Thanks for the report and mentioning the burbot. I have only caught a couple and that was from Banks. Going to move them up on my priority list, they are really good eating. Too bad about all the dinks but at least they were biting and that keeps a guy interested.
