For the record, this month (Aug.) has been a difficult month to consistently locate decent kokanee schools. Definitely my most unproductive month this season. With that being said I felt it was necessary to scout the river Sunday evening in preparation for my 4 guests on Monday.

I invited a buddy to come along Sunday evening and we started our search. We stopped at several of my favorite Kokanee holes but the hummingbird was void of fish. My spirit finally lifted once we stopped at the basin. Finally I had some great marks on the screen and I knew they were big kokes. Apparently all the stars and planets aligned that night, because fishing was incredible. All of our takes were explosive and borderline scary. I was sure we were going to break a pole this evening. At one point the clicker on one of my rods caught my attention. At first I sat motionless and perplexed. I couldn't figure out how I had snagged up on the bottom. Just then my trance was broken by the sound of a 4 pound kokanee thrashing about the surface. I was never really great at math, but I finally put 2 and 2 together and realized we had a fish on. It's been 2 months since I've had a koke jumping on the surface like this. Well to make a long story short... between two doubles, a triple, and multiple other bites, we hooked up on 10 and took home 4 jumbo kokes in just a few hours. Simply an excellent trip.

Monday I returned to the same spot with 4 guests from Winthrop. The fish must have still been hungry, because we were blessed with a handsome limit of big Kokanee. All of these fish were caught in 90-135' of water. My guest had a great time and went home with a big batch of fillets.

Since these successful trips I have fished this same spot twice. The big kokes were not to be found. Not there or any of the other places I looked. I think I just got lucky on Sunday and Monday. These fish are really sparse right now and seem to be difficult to pattern. It looks like I may have picked the perfect time to switch over to catching kings.

Nice report Capt n. Are the fish showing any signs of spawning? If not these fish will be unbelievable throughout this winter and next season! WOW.
Do you change tactics or gear this time of year vs in the summer?

Yes, the spawners will return up the Poil and Spokane rivers. We will most likely loose a good portion of these fish to the spawn this year, but there are also a lot of jumbos that aren't showing any signs of spawning and oddly enough seem to be mostly females with underdeveloped skeins. I have a feeling we will still be catching these in 2017. Lately I've been catching a lot of small hatchery kokes. Oddly these seem to be mostly males that look like they plan on spawning this year.

My tactics haven't changed much thought the season. Speed has remained a constant 1.7 mph all season. Dodgers and leaders haven't changed. The fish were biting larger baits during the winter and spring, but smaller presentations like spinners, hoochies, and apex have produced all year. Of course the depth I fish has changed as has my method of delivery. I'm seeing the water start to cool which will most bring the fish shallower as the fall progresses. Scent has also remained constant. Once again, thanks for your support and I hope to see you on the river.

It is so refreshing to read an honest report from a guide. I admire your the fact that you seem to be a great fisherman and seem to be person for sharing your knowledge with other folks and I would like to thank you for that. There are sooooooo many guilds on the water now days and a lot of them just seem to want to brag about how early they can get their clients back to the dock with limits like it's all about the meat and nothing about the experience of just being out there enjoying the trip. I have fished next to a couple different guides several times until mid afternoon when they head back to the docks and then that night read their reports about how they had their limits and were back at the dock by 8 or 9am, So keep up the good work and I always look forward to reading your reports, I hope to meet you on the water one day, just keep an eye out for the SEAHAWK boat and give us a wave. Good luck and stay safe.
