Today I got a chance to fish with NWFR staff member Rob Holman and a couple of friends back down to Roosevelt in search of more silver bullets. The drive took a little longer due to the fog, but we managed to get the boat in the water by 7. We arrived at our spot and quickly got our 7 rods out. All rods had a dodger and various kokanee offerings once again tipped with corn. Shortly after we got set up we had our first take-down. Yeah!!! Fish ON!!! followed by NOOO!!!! Fish Off!!! Oh well it's expected to lose one once in a while. Five minutes later we had a second take-down. This fish also fell off. As did number three. Now I was confused , because we hardly ever lose this many kokes when they are big like this. As we were completing our loop we had take down number 4, 5, and 6. None of which reached the boat. My only conclusion was that these fish were side slapping the bait and not hooking up in the mouth. This was not the way I wanted to start the day. Fortunately things turned around and we landed 8 of the next nine kokanee we hooked. We had ourselves a really fun day with a lot of action. Great work today fellas. I know you will enjoy eating these tasty little fishes.
As always it is fun hearing from NWFR members and even more fun to have you on the boat and share with you what I know about this great fishery. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about my service.
Todays Tidbit: The last couple of weeks I have been getting fewer bites on my downrigger rods. My other rods are fishing at about 5-10' deep and are catching fish all day long. Even though I am marking some kokanee at 25-35' deep its not where they seem to like to bite.
