Man i wish fishing was that good around here, woulda been a five star in book. Good to see some one is catching and taking the time to get new people onto fish.

Nice! I agree on the barbless hooks. I think the main way they help survival rates is to pre-release the fish! Now our only secret weapon is prayer.

We need a reversal of the barbless rule in areas where fish are 1) excess for harvest, 2) in areas that do not have significant numbers of listed fish at the time of the fishery, and 3) when the target fish is one that does not "take" a lure deeply, that is, as they would if bait was used. Barbless hook studies are based on either trout or coho I suspect, and are very different from col river chinook as found in the reach. Decisions that limit gear should be based on good science, not easy management.

It probably has to do more with most of those fish are actually hatchery fish and not really wild. I talked with the fish checker 3 weeks ago when we went to Vernita for Kings and he said they only clip 15% of the fish up at the hatchery. I knew that hatcheries did this, but I was thinking more in the 50% range, but 15% is ridiculous. But yeah, the barbless hook rule sucks up there, I think we ended up losing 4 fish that weekend. I wish my dad could get back up over this way again now that the fishing is really good up there.

I use barbless hooks for all types of fishing all the time. Less messy and don't have to worry about where barbs are legal or not.
Thanks for the report!
