Day One of my Father’s Day fishing adventure felt kind of weird to be away from home and on my own. A sign of grown kids - my younger son wasn’t interested in a two day fishing trip, and the older boy is off in college, Montana. So with my wife in Kansas visiting relatives I had a free pass to do what I wanted. What I wanted was to fish!
I met up with Uncle Wes and Bruce Warren of Fishing for Fun Guide Service to spend the day fishing for Columbia River sturgeon around the Kalama area. I’d never fished this stretch of the Columbia so I was pretty excited to see what it was like, and the prospect of tangling with an over-sized sturgeon is something I’m always down for.
Bruce and his dog Bobber took Uncle Wes and I to several locations over the course of the day. Our primary gear was sand shrimp off the bottom. We also tried some shad fillets in search of the big boys. Bruce has a very comfortable 23 foot North River sled. He had his favorite holes lined up and at each one we’d catch 1-2 sturgeon. The fish were all sub-legal today (under 38”) and we ended up with just short of a dozen. The season is closed for retention so it was a strict catch and release trip. We unfortunately never tangled with Mr Eight-footer. That was OK, it was a fun day just the same. Good weather, good fishing, and good company.
Thanks Wes and Warren for another nice adventure on the Mighty Columbia!
