Lake Roosevelt, great scenery, wildlife and spectacular fishing. Two out of three can't be all bad, right? Yesteday was simply a beautiful day, blue skies, no wind, calm water, wildlife galore, my favorite fishing companions, and, well, no fish.

I can't remember how long it's been since an outing to Roosevelt hasn't produced at least one fish, a couple years or more. We threw everything at them, changed tactics, presentations, speeds, locations, all for naught. We couldn't buy a hit yesterday and the only action our lines saw was when I inadvertantly trolled into some thin surface ice in the San Poil. Lost a leader on a leaded line rig there.

We fished the San Poil, the entire distance from Whitestone to Sterling point, crossed over to the other side there and fished all the way back to Lincoln. Trolling speeds ranged from 1.8 - 3mph, surface temps were 38.8° - 38.9° all day, outside air temps were in the teens at launch time, moving up to the mid-30s by late morning. We ran leaded line out 150' and long lines 195'.

One of the trip highlights were the Bighorn sheep on the hills across from Lincoln. Saw a herd of about 25 on our way to the San Poil, and two smaller groups (6 and 11) while fishing that same shoreline in the afternoon, pic is of the second group. Saw several Bald Eagles and deer too. By noon, the temp inside was 70°, so I shut the heat off while my companions napped and I just marveled at nature's best. :-)
