I'm lumping a 3-day trip into one report. Fishing was tough to say the least. We arrived Friday and spent the evening fishing in the arm for SMB and walleye. I managed to hook about a half dozen 10" - 12" SMB and they all went back, no walleye at all. We were using jigs with worms and crankbaits. The SMB hit on the cranks, but none on the jigs.

Saturday was a run and gun day trying to locate some schools of kokes. We left Seven Bays and headed downstream to Spring Canyon in hopes of finding some deep suspended schools there, but no luck. Even though I never spotted any schools, I did drop the gear and tried anyway since we were there. After an hour or two we moved up to Whitestone and repeated, again nothing on the sonar, but I soaked some gear nonetheless. Same results too.

About 3pm we decided to move back to the Seven Bays area since we had a 6pm dinner date, I dropped the gear again and in 5 minutes had a solid hit and run off the downrigger. After a mini-Chinese fire drill we got the downriggers up and I brought a nice 20" RBT to the net. A quick reload and back the depths with the gear, but no more to be found.

Today, we decided to stay in the Seven Bays area, and worked above and below the marina with absolutely nothing but a nice boat ride. Sometimes it's just the way it goes.

I occasionally marked small schools in the 50' - 55' range and we were trolling flashers with a hoochie on one and a muddler on the other. I had the downriggers set at 60' with the release clipped 5' above the ball. Thermocline was at 55', so we were in the zone, but the target wasn't hungry.

Water surface temps were in the 72° - 74° range all 3 days. Air temps were in the low 90s, too warm when you can't hide from the sun.

Nice report. Very informative. Maybe you would have had better luck if you had a smilin' old guy on board. It was great talking with you the other evening. I'm looking forward to trying out you tips.

We plan on heading out there this labor day weekend. Thanks for the informative post. I guess the fishing will pick up when the water cools down?

ShakeNBake - Fishing usually picks up when the water temps cool down, at least for trout anyway. Maybe the mid-week cool down will help things for the weekend.

Lotech - Was a pleasure to chat with you. I'm looking forward to reading a successful Roosevelt report from you. :-)
