Fished Below John Day Dam again for sturgeon for a few hours on the 4th. Hooked 5 and landed 3 in 2-3 hours. Great day, no wind and good friends. Biggest was 8'7" and had one break our 12/0 Big River hook. We used whole shad on the bottom. This is a great oversized fishery that a lot of people pass up. We only saw two other boats fishing for sturgeon. Should be good for another few weeks! Good luck and tight lines!!!

Hey Rippin This eightballsaul. I've been Sturgeon fishing for only a couple of years and I am still learning the areas to go. Thanks for the tip. I have not fished for oversized fish yet but have been wanting to try it. Do you need any special tackle other than larger hooks and line? I have all of my standard sturgeon tackle already. Thanks again.

Nothing real special, I probably use smaller than most. I am set up with a 7'6" heavy rod, with 400 series reels, with 85lb power-pro main line and 200 lb power pro leader. We generally use 6-12 oz cannon ball weights from the boat. Hook size can vary from 9/0-12/0 depends on the bait i am using. If i am going to fish deeper water than 30' i will go to a reel that can handle more line. That is about it. Good luck!!!
