My grandfather and I decided to head out to the Wallace and check it out, after hearing that river conditions were good and that people were beginning to catch some fish. We had never been to the river before, so it was more of a scouting day than anything.

We started off underneath the bridge at 363rd avenue and were floating jigs of both brighter and darker colors. We had no luck not a single bobber down, however some guy fly fishing did catch a large bull trout. We decided after about 40 minutes to head to a different spot, as the river here was swift and would be better with waders which we forgot to grab.

We then went to the highway 2 bridge, where the railroad and highway to cross at the same spot. The water was perfect. at least 2-3 feet of visibility, smooth and calmly flowing water, prime for floating jigs. we tried a couple different shore spots in that area for about 2 hours with no luck, even after switching to a dick nite. Not even a trout bite.

Seemed like we were just in the wrong spot, at the wrong time. Probably should have brought our waders. Water is great, and not to flooded yet.

Tight lines, and have fun!

That hwy 2 bridge hole gets pounded relentlessly every day. The only reasonable time to fish there is the first 30 minutes of light, or while the water is fast and brown and on the rise. Ive caught lots of fish there in the past. The reacuring theme is to fish where others are not. So the bridge hole is best when everything else is blown to the point that people just stay home.

Yup, jonb is right. I caught my one and only steelhead in that river right before daybreak and after a huge rain, only me and my brother crazy enough to go out and fish. Definitely wader is more helpful as you can cover more holes.
