Coho Salmon

Not much action today. I had a decent size coho aggressively torpedo towards a rather gaudy chartreuse twitch jig that I had to lift up to avoid snagging on a log. Unfortunately, as soon as it saw me it turned and kept going upstream. What surprised me is that fish actually saw the lure from at least 15 feet away and from the middle of the river and it swam perpendicular to the current to get at my lure. The river is really clear and low. I saw a few fish leap in the middle of the river but I think my coho season on the Snoho is over.

I had three people tell me that they caught double digit cohos outside of Thomas Eddy in the Snohomish last year but caught nothing this year. It appears to me that the cohos simply did not really stage like normal in the Snoho (outside of TE) due to the low water. They were travelling through so fast people were catching fish with sea lice in the Skykomish. The fish I saw (and I saw a fair number of fish) seemed to disappear as quickly as they showed up. You would see fish leaping and boiling up for about 20 minutes than nothing at all afterward. I am glad I stuck it out on the Snoho as I feel I learned a lot and had a chance to fish away from the crowds that followed the fish upriver. Kind of sounds like the Sky was the same way this year with either lots of fish or nothing at all with a few people picking off the stragglers and lone travelers after a lot of searching like I did.

If you have not heard. Snoho/Sky are closed for salmon due to low runs. This apparently is the cause for the low catch rate.

Thanks for the heads up. That makes more sense. From what everybody had been saying it sounded like the fishing should have been a bit more constant and better than it turned out to be. I feel lucky to have hooked into the fish that that I did. The water is so low with no new fish coming in that I had already decided to quit fishing anyway.

The fish are still in the salt. People have been killin' it over at the baitbox.

Near Clinton but closer to Possession Point across the water from Mukilteo. It is a beach fishery. I am told that it is slowing down for the year though.

What's the best method for coho from the beach? Thinkjng about heading out this weekend...only fished from the beach once and got skunked.

I've been told buzz bombs but I have not actually tried it.

Keep an eye out of the Creel reports. Watch for the numbers caught vs number of fisherman from Ediz Hook and from Olson's docks. Those two will give you a real good idea if fish are still coming in to the sound. As of Sunday at least, the numbers were still good.

Two best methods for beach fishing are a chartreuse either rotator or buzz bomb with a pink hoochie with a fairly fast retrieve. Don't jig like you do for pinks, just retrieve. Or fish a herring under a float. I use smallest sized herring (or anchovy if I can't get herring). Brine for at least 24 hours before going out. I just buy bottled brine, whatever is available. Prefer Mike's or Pautzke's, don't care for Pro-cure but will use it if that's all I can get. From the bobber stop to the bait should be about 3 - 4 feet. I prefer closer to 3 that 4.

Guess the news is out, Area 10 closed to all Salmon fishing..and the rivers too!...it was good while it lasted.

@JoshH, when the Area opens back up I'm gonna have to try your technique. I've been casting and slow jigging Pt. Wilson Dart and P-Line laser minnow type jigs from shore, had a little bit of success but not a lot. Hope it opens up again.

Coho like to chase. It's the same rules as if you are trolling. Faster troll gets you more strikes, same with a retrieve. If there is a good current I like to throw out the herring just because there is something about the anticipation of watching for the bobber to go under. :)

Went out to the beach at picnic point. Didn't even get a strike. Gotta figure this beach thing out. Especially if that's all I can fish from at the moment.

I was out this past weekend too ncobble. I saw nothing caught, and I talked to others that had been at Fort Casey and nothing there either. After looking at the creel reports, the Coho are done . Numbers just vanished last Wednesday.
