Figured I'd make my way down to the Cowlitz today to get in on some springer action before the run was over. Woke up late and managed to get there by 9:45. Started off casting eggs under a float for a while then switched to a jig. Only one fish was caught over the course of an hour and a half. Lots of fish rolling near the dam but nothing was biting. Decided to switch gear again and started drifting a 0# Dick Nite in purple and pink and got my first hit, a 5" baby Chinook. Cast again right outside the seam near the outflow and wham fish on. Had to let him run and try to tire him out since I was running 12lb test from my last steelhead trip. Finally after a 10 minute fight landed my first Chinook of the season. Wasn't a record breaker for me but I'll take an 11lb hatchery any day over a skunk.
