We arrived at Blue lake thursday evening, put the boat in the water and headed to the island to try powerbait on the bottom. After an hour without any bites I decided to move into deeper water, still no luck. I had caught a lot of fish last year trolling, so switched to a wedding ring tipped with a worm, and injected with anchovie juice. I picked up a couple of 10 and 11 inchers, but had seen a lot of bigger fish on the fishfinder at 30 to 40 feet. I had two downriggers in the cuddy from fishing lake washington sockeye, so I set them up and ran the balls down to 35 feet. BINGO. There were 9 of us camping over the weekend, and whenever we wanted fish we set the downriggers up and trolled the shore in 55 feet of water. all the fish were 15-17 inches. A green wedding ring at 35 feet, trailing a worm injected with anchovie juice as close to the shore as possible, but staying in 55 feet of water was deadly. We had a lot of doubles! What fun.
P.S. A lot of people thought we were crazy using downriggers on Blue Lake, but I gave away a lot of fish to others at the resort who wanted to take some home. It was 100 degrees over the weekend, and the fish were deep. People were not set up to get down to the fish.
