Got out for a great day of springer fishing last week. Launched o dark thirty at the barrier access site. River was pretty desolate which was not what I expected. Flows had been dropped significantly and a new weather system was moving in so fishing was questionable. Worked some holes hard and had a fish on first thing in the morning. Things looked good, but the rest of our limit came throughout the day and fish weren't really back to back making it a 4 vs. a 5. That being said there were plenty of fish to be had and we capitalized on our true opportunities while missing a couple of short bites and it was an awesome day. Bouncing bait on the bottom was the method of choice and you really had to get in in their face for a bite. Once the fish hit you knew it though, and what a fight!
My journey for my first springer started on the Icicle June 1st, a trip in which I missed two fish and slept in a drift boat for the opportunity to catch one of these prized specimen. Getting my two fish on this trip was really rewarding and I am hooked on springers for sure. My two came in at around 17 and 14 pounds, were chrome bright, and had awesome red meat. Boat limited out with 8 adults and 1 jack, off the water at 3:00 and fish on the grill by 5:00.
Tight lines all!
