Wow guys, just wow!

Fishing has been fantastic. Multiple chances at fish daily, and a great drift through gorgeous country. We've been drifting the Wynoochee for the past week and it's been tons of fun. Depending on flows, we're drifting the upper or lower. In the heavier flows, the upper drift has been very good to us, when it falls back down, the drift from Crossover to Black Creek it very nice. Even from the bank we've been hooking up, and the fish have been holding throughout the river.

I'm not saying it's easy fishing, as if steelhead ever are, but every day we're getting multiple chances at large fish. A mixed bag of chrome and earlier arriving fish, and everyone once in a while we're catching a native steelhead or two.

Best techniques are to pull up to the froggy slack water and drift something orange or purple and red through. Side drifting down and casting at the bank, under the trees is the name of the game between slack spots, and the best way to find the fresh chrome moving through. The fact that half of the fish we're catching are bright means that we have a lot of time left in the season, and it sure is nice to be able to take fish home in this late run, rather than harassing the native fish on the Peninsula.

Visibility has been steelhead green, although we have been fishing in the rain, the double heater in the boat keeps us nice and warm. With the heavy flows and flood watch on the Chehalis this week, those fish that have been waiting to ttraverse the nets will be able to puch up, and I expect another blast of nice big fish to come. Keep an eye on the gauges because once the Black Creek station drops to below 3k, fishing conditions will be ideal.

As for later in the month, the Cowlitz fish counts are looking better. Our first springer of the year was counted this week, and into March we'll be able to have the chance of a mixed bag of late steelhead and spring chinook. It sure is refreshing to hit the Cowlitz in a quiet drift boat, no need for ear plugs to drown out the big motor.

Great report and heard you took my friends Brandon and Torrey (probably spelled that wrong) and they really had a great time with you Nate! Did you guys take out at white bridge or crossover? Nice to get them a fish and some action for sure with breathtaking scenery of course to boot!

Thanks for taking us out Nate! We had a great time and it was nice to see that steelhead are indeed real and not a myth! Thanks for sharing your wealth of fishing knowledge with us. Your drift boat is awesome! Barry, those are my feet in front of that fish. Next time we will focus more and not miss so many chances at hookups.... Also, it's Branden and Tori. @Barry - Branden, Tori and I drifted from 7400 that day. It was a great day, aside from the torrential rain! Halfway through the day the river skyrocketed and muddied up something ugly, but we did get some fish to bite early on. We're still working on breaking your record for size though, that was a gorgeous fish you caught!

@Branden - I'm glad you guys had a good time. Next time we'll fill the fish box, I can see it now. If there's one thing to take away from the trip it's to hit 'em hard! Like I always say, it your bobber isn't behind you in the trees if it wasn't a bite, you're not setting it hard enough. They're steelhead for a reason!
