We hit the river with 40 of our closest friends in hopes of some late season steelhead. Myself and two friends worked a lot of water from daybreak till 1:00 pm and had 3 opportunities to land some steel. Only one of them stuck but we were not alone in the low productivity department. I hooked two and landed one. The first hookup was my first takedown of the day after 3 plus hours of nothing. I watched the bobber go down with more curiousity than urgency and ended up with a marginally late hookset. I lost the fish after a couple of brief runs and was kicking myself for not being more attentive and aggressive on the takedown. I really need to treat each cast as one that might be my only chance for a fish for the day but that is a hard thing to do. The next takedown occurred while I was comiserating with another fisherman about the lack of action considering the river conditions. Thank god I was paying better attention and hit the fish in the middle of a sentence. This nice hatchery hen made it to the beach and made my day. We fished for another hour or so with no excitement or chances but enjoyed a beautiful day on the river. I feel I did a better job of mixing up my jig offerings and moving about the river but there is always something one can do better over the course of a day of fishing and it seems to make the difference between no fish days and some fish days.......Tight lines.

thanks for the report. good job on the landed fish. I gave up steelhead fishing for fish that aren't smarter than me. although some days there aren't very many of those.

Great story about persistence and learning.

I sure can relate; the same day I went up after work and watched my bobber go sideways then down. I thought I had snagged the bottom, then there was action on my rod and the fish jumped and did acrobatics....I assumed the fish was hooked well as it started to take out line then it was gone.....I even thought about a late hook set........but didnt as the action when it jumped made me think it was hooked rather well..lesson learned.
