I showed up at the Wallace hatchery at 7. Waded out to the bank opposite of what I think is called "May creek"? My goal was to wade out to the spot close to hwy 2 (not sure what it's called). But since it was still dark out with a high and fast river, I decided to wait until day break at May creek before getting up enough courage to continue wading the river. While waiting, I heard a couple of good splashes from jumping fish that got me pumped for the first cast. Once it was just light enough I decided to toss in a float with a pink jig and shrimp. Tried that spot for about an hour with no results. At that time it was full day break so I found a nice walking stick and decided to take my chances continuing the journey down stream. The current was strong and the water was waist high in some spots. All I could think about was "the trek back up river is going to be sketchy and really hard". I finally made it and damn did that take a lot out of me. I tried everything from floating jigs with shrimp, straight jig, eggs, corky and yarn, bead and hook, drifting with all the above, pink worm, casting spinners, etc.... Nothing! I switched back to floating an orange jig and c&r'd a 12" wild steelhead. I called it quits and headed back up stream. The only other fish I saw caught was a big red fire truck coho.

wouldnt a 12" fish be a trout and therefore keepable, regardless of whether it was wild or hatchery?
