Had a little time today so I went after whitefish in the Yakima canyon this afternoon. Largest was 20" smallest 14". All caught on my own chartreuse flies. I caught the fish in the Yakima River not the Naches. Step 3: in Location does not have the Yakima River on the list.

You have to bring up Benton county to be able to post for the Yakima River. I am sure that is the reason there are few reports for the canyon area. I don't bother posting much for this stretch as I don't feel I should have to explain the area fish'd is actually in a different county. Very confusing for many people. It was brought up before but I guess It's to hard to do separate counties for this river. The Columbia River is the same way I believe. Nice catch though GordyC

Hi Gordy - I have never fished for the white fish. How do you fish the fly you showed if I may ask? Thanks - Alan

Bottom oriented feeders? That big un has a defined "pushed up" snout! From pushing rocks and stuff over? Stonefly's, in live or tied fly form very effective with Whitefish? Thanks for sharing. What material are used for that fly? I feel like a few recent fishing reports has heated up my fly tying bench!

Alan, I tip the fly with a maggot. I have also caught whitefish with my flies without bait. There are 2 ways to fish for whitefish, bobbers and or drag lining. Remember, whitefish are bottom feeder so you need to keep the fly as close to the bottom as possible. I'll use a slip bobber in slow moving current, drag lining in the faster deeper holes. Good luck.

MotoBoat, I use a material called flat diamond braid made by Hareline. I first wrap the hook with yarn to build up the body, you don't need much. Use yarn the same color as the flat diamond braid you are going to use. I next brush clear finger nail polish on the yarn body before I wrap the diamond braid. If you don't do this the diamond braid will start start to come apart because of the hook ups. Last, wrap the hackle. Good luck, catch lots of fish.

Is diamond braid similiar to the body material used for Zonkers (a minnow pattern)? I am wondering how using fingernail polish on a zonker body, before finish tying the rabbit fur to the front of the fly would work. Just thinking out loud, and for your thoughts.

Diamond braid is a flat material. The body material for the Zonker is a tube. The diamond braid is not as smooth as the tube material. Google flat diamond braid to see the difference. I wouldn't but nail polish on the Zonker body, you might glue some of the rabbit hairs together.

Thanks for the tip Gordy. Will have to give them a try some day. Wonder where they might be fished from a boat? I love my top and heater! Spoiled you know

Yes, I know the river reports can be a bit confusing at times as rivers run through and border multiple counties. The Columbia has it's own report section. Nice catch and great looking nymph.

Downriggeral, Priest Rapids is a great spot to boat drift for these whitefish. November is the best month. Use fake single salmon eggs, the whitefish are gorging on the real salmon eggs this time of the month.
