Fished Sprague on this cloudy but fairly calm day. Lot of boats on the lake from top to bottom. Water fairly clear. Some rain. For the first time in a couple years, we caught lots of walleyes, smallmouth bass and some crappies. We limited on walleyes 17-22 inches and caught probably 25 other sublegals mostly 13-15 inches. Crappies to 9 inches were caught while we were walleye fishing using 3-4 inch rubber jigs in 3-10 feet of water. Could have caught lots of crappie if we had been using smaller jigs. Our limit included 2 males loaded with chironomids and 8 females with nothing in their stomachs. All fish were post spawn with only next year's eggs in them. This lake really does have lots of walleyes as we have witnessed the state net sampling. Last year saw 10 and 12 lbs walleyes in their buckets along with lots of other walleyes, carp, and bass. Not many other species as the net size with too big for crappies, perch and other small fish. It is just a case of too much feed in the lake. Most walleyes we catch when we do catch them are loaded with chironomid larvae that take little effort to catch. I used chironomid patterns on this trip for a short time but no action. Might be a better technique in the summer under the thick algae layer.
