It’s been a great couple of weeks. Warm weather, low water and lots and lots of fish. The Skykomish has been amazing for steelhead. There are a lot of fish in the river right now, and they are aggressive and angry, just begging to be caught. We’ve been running light gear, small hooks and small beads and flies to get our bites. The number one thing to remember is to stay low, and stay back. Back off the fish, back off the bank, and low. The water is crystal clear right now. The fish can see you coming a mile away, and if they see you, they will spook and lock down. In the holes that I know have fish, we rig up as far back as we can, sneak up to the water just close enough to get an accurate cast and stay low, and we hook up. If a guy walks behind you, even casually, the fish can see it. I can’t emphasize it enough!

That being said, if you do sneak and fish, these fish will bite all day long! Black or orange are drawing strikes. No bobbers, just drifting light, as light as you can get, and those fish will bite!

So for the next couple of weeks I’m going to be focusing on getting you your steelhead! This is a great time to come out for a lesson and catch your first steelhead. I haven’t put my waders on more than once in the last few weeks! Fun in the sun and fish too, it’s been a great time. Give me a call and we’ll get you set up on some of these steelhead while it’s hot!

There are also a few areas opening up for Chinook, and we’ll be catching more of those in the next few weeks too, so that’s another thing to keep in mind.

In other news, the Snohomish already has a decent amount of pinks trickling in, and it will be in full swing in a couple of weeks, and will only get better! I’m already booking trips for pinks on the Snohomish, and my Pavati is a great way to enjoy catching a mess of these willing biters and vicious little fighters. Stay tuned for the pinks, it’s one of the more exciting runs that we’re going to have this year! Pinks are plentiful enough to keep the kids interested and put up a great fight for everyone. I’ll see you guys on the water!
