Had another great day at the Skookumchuck River. The water has dropped about 2-3 feet from last Friday although it is still a little murky. My buddy Joe and I both caught our first Steelhead today! What a charge!! We got to the river about 10:30 a.m. and fished near the concrete pad. I used a lot of different color yarn and corkies during the course of the day, but the most consistent for me was a pink pearl corkie (thanks for the tip schu7498) and hot pink yarn with shrimp oil on a size 4 hook. Third cast it was fish on... a bright hen on the small side (approx 4 or 5 lbs - I released her).
Joe caught the next fish, a gorgeous fat chrome hen (approx 10 lbs - see picture). What a beauty for his first Steelhead!! After we were done I told him he won the derby for first keeper, and biggest & brightest fish.
I hooked up and lost six more fish over the next few hours. Felt an incredible headshake on one bit! That was really exciting. Felt like a monster. I was bummed when it came unhooked. About 4:30 p.m. the fish started rolling all over the place. At approx 5:00 pm I hit back to back bucks and got both in. The first one fought really hard (approx 9 lbs). Not bad for my first keeper! The second one was a little sluggish, but was a beautiful fish so I kept him too (approx 7 lbs).
Man that was fun. I wish this river was in my back yard 'cause I'd be out there everyday!!! Appreciate the kind locals who netted our fish. Tight lines!
