Went out on the P.O. River with Derek Fisher, from Chapter 57 who is from the Portland area yesterday to chase a few pike. We launched at Oldtown and fished a bunch of the river from the launch to dead cow slew. We got a fish or 2 at every spot we fished except Dead cow slew but the weather was horrid right when we got to it. So didn't stay there long and went back upriver to what I am going to name Fish-N-Fool Island as it has no name currently that I can find. It has some cool structure and I have been doing well there as of late. We picked up fish at Miltners both in the morning on the way down and again on the way back.
I have been praising the benefits of using fluorocarbon for leaders for Pike and not a steel leader as I don't like the way steel leaders kill the action of most lures and i had never lost a fish that was hooked on fluoro. Well I had the first fish bite me off yesterday. It shredded my 60 lb fluoro, My rod loaded up heavy and bang it was gone so i think it might have been a really big fish but i will never know. Anyway Derek was throwing a big ugly hairy fly most of the day and got quite a few nice but smaller fish on it. About half the fish he got to the boat didn't even have the hook in them !!!! Their teeth were just hung up in all that hair. So Weird!!!! He would get a lot of followers that he could almost force feed that fly to them by just keeping it moving a bit.
I got one really nice fish, my biggest so far this year. I didn't get a chance to tape her as she really had my basstrix smiwbait down her throat and it took me a little longer to get her released then I like so I just did a quick snap shot and got her back in the water. She went about 10 lb. would be my best guess.
We ended the day with I think 8 or 9 fish in the boat. The weather was fair in the morning and sucked in the afternoon with pretty much a steady downpour till we pulled out at 7PM. But is was a fun day even with the rain. I meet a new freind and we got some nice fish and I got to see my first pike caught on a fly rod.

Yah I'm sure it wasn't, LOL Salmon don't have the teeth these things have and the fight they put up is way better too.

The Hair/tooth tangle is more common than you might think. They clamp down like a vise. Catfish and Lingcod and Muskie do it too, but mostly the pike. We've caught a lot of pike and muskie that way, especially in North Dakota for some reason, but it always seems a little weird, and adds a little adrenaline to the mix: PLEASE... stay on... one...more... second! Nice fish!

This may seem like a dumb question but i have never been to the PO river. Does launching in old town allow you to go upriver towards Cusick?

Your right it is a dumb question, lol as you have to go down stream to get to Cusick not up, but yes you can launch in old town and get to Cusick. I would not recommend it though as if you are not familiar with the river system it is very hazardous to navigate. You have to know the river to get around on it with out running aground. It had many sunken humps in the middle of the river that are 2 feet deep or less as well as rocks and deadheads. I would suggest you go out with someone that knows that area very well first.

Yeah thought about the whole up river down river thing after i posted. I do appreciate the info. So would it be best for a newbie to launch further north then. and stay away from Newport?
