Hit a few spots on the Spokane today. Started out at Sullivan and had a few take a look at a black bugger but no takes. There were a few olive caddis and mayflies in the air but no major hatches. I was hoping to see some October caddis but no luck. I tried several dry patterns although nothing was raising and after about 2hrs we headed to Marabou Park where we only stayed a short while as the better rifts were out further and we were not fishing wet.
3pm- we hit the south side of Plantes Ferry park and found a nice eddy with a few seams and finally saw fish rising. The caddis patterns failed to bring any strikes so I went to #14 olive dunn and released three fish in less than an hour. I am about 95% they were land-locked chinook (see pic). The mouth and gums were black and after looking at some pics on the internet I am pretty confident. They fought very hard for 12-14 inch fish. I usually fish around the gun club and was very surprised to finally release one.
I also managed to pull a 12in rainbow towards the end of the day using a hot butt olive caddis.
The weather was outstanding and the fishing was good considering I have had many outings on the Spokane with no hook-ups at all

The picture caught my eye and I had initially thought you had accidentally selected the wrong river. Definitely a chinook, which I didn't think were being planted in the river, they are scrappy and voracious fish to be sure! I'm guessing it escaped Lake Coeur d'Alene, be sure to let your region's WDFW biologist know, and send them the pic as well.

G-Man- I have heard tale of some very large Chinook that were caught just below the Upriver dam but have never verified. I am sure they spilled over from the CDA. I saw some fish in this same section from a birds eye view on top of one the huge rock Islands and if I had to guess they were 7-10lbs. They were down deep with no way to get a fly near them. I just found this site a few days ago....very cool site.
