Today My Grandpa and I woke up a little late but we decided that we had fishin to do so we decided to go south. First stop The Mighty Cow. Stopped by the barrier dam and saw a dark king caught and a few rollers. Btw everyone almost was twitching jigs. So we went down by the boat launch and saw 2 chrome silvers and a few dark kings but a ton of people so we decided to go to blue creek and see how steelhead was doing. lots of cutts swimming around in the 12-15" range. Saw one steelhead on the bank and one guy I talked to using a 5wt fly rod said he got a snagged 15lb steelhead in the morning and turned it loose. I was up for some steel action but my grandpa wanted to continue south. Next stop Kalama. we fished for a while above modrow with fish rolling but no one was hooking up so we went to see how the fly fisherman were doing and they were getting some dark kings and silvers but not a whole lot. btw below modrow and above the fish rack they are STACKED! and I saw steelhead just sitting in the tailout! man I wanted to fish it. Anyway we continued south to the lewis. We got to the lewis right by the hatchery and saw fish rolling but no fish on the bank and everyone said it was slow... not lookin good. Walked up to the fast water on the gravel bar and FISH ON! they were hooking them! dark kings mostly but a few silvers. I thought you could keep kings but you could not. I gave my regs to one guy who did not know he had a king... I went and rigged up with a float and eggs and fished a big swirl below them for a while as I watched king after king get hooked up there. Then Wait that aint a king! that guy got a steelhead! I'm Going up there! I fished there for a while with nothing then switched back to eggs for a while and as it got dark I went back to drifting with glow corkies. I had not fished long after dark when FISH ON!!! yes finally i got one! fighting hard dont lose him dont lose him, hes jumping! not too big! steelhead!?!? as he got near the bank I saw the snow white belly and chrome sides I got him into shallow water and ran down to it. wait waait somthing is not right wrong shape. go to tail him and what do i feel? that extra fin  turns out it was an absolutley CHROME king that darn near swallowed my glow corkies! turned him loose and called it a day.

sorry for the bad pic, I was in a hurry to send it on its way.

Thanks for the report! Great story, too bad about that "unclipped hatchery fish" you landed. Bet it woulda tasted just as good as a "clipped" fish! But anyways, at least you had some action! I hit the Columbia over the weekend and landed a few shaker sturgeon but I was thinking about going to the Lewis since a buddy told me he had limited several times last week there. But that place is usually a zoo on Saturday, good to know though that there are a few fish around there!

Thanks again crankbait, hope you get a keeper next time! ;-)

Foulhooked 15 pound steel brought in on the Cow using a 5 wt?? Was it winter steel? Dang, I wanna meet that guy LOL. That is a chromey for the rivers any time of year, especially now. Nice pic.
