We launched at North Faber’s Landing today (between Concrete and Rockport) and fished the upper Skagit. Running a prop as far upstream and downstream as possible we fished every little eddy, backwater, tailout and run available. It was some tough fishing! We pulled out the stops and employed every salmon fishing technique known the PNW salmon fisherman with only limited success. Eggs/float, spinners, Dick Night spoons, corkies and yarn, plugs, ,jig twitch’n, side drifting and back trolling did not result in hooking one of the 100,000 coho that were forecasted to return to the Skagit river this fall. Ok, I take that back, I did catch a 12 or 13” coho that slipped out of my hand, over the side of the boat and back into the river while I was trying to get a picture of it. We also caught a beautiful 16“ cutthroat. In spite of the less than corporative fish the company and conversation were good and it was a great day on the river.
100,000...Are they just very late? Or not coming home at all?
