I fished the Cascade for a few hours this afternoon/evening. I parked at the boat ramp and hiked in. I will admit that I spent most of the time exploring. This was my first time on the river since the chinook opener and the river has changed quite a bit from last December. The fishing was great but the catching was a challenge. I started out fishing a float and jig in back eddies and small seams with no luck. I did go bobber down once but I never saw the fish. After working all the holes with the float/jig combo I switched to my Cascade River special and worked my way back through the same holes I had just worked over with the float and jig. Again no luck, But I did see a very skinny downstream steelhead holding in a back eddy. I fished both 1/8 and ΒΌ ounce jigs in black/red and black/white. When I switched to my drift fishing rig I went with black yarn and a small red/chrome corky. There is a theme here, over the years I have had very good success with steelhead, dollies, coho and chinook while fishing the Cascade with small black and something offerings, usually black and red. Final score hundreds of casts and no fish but some incredible fishing.
