Took off early from work to try my luck at a spot I’ve been keeping an eye on. There’s only room for one or two anglers so when I saw 3 rigs parked there, I kept driving. Went to another place next to the road and clamored the near vertical path down to gravel bar ten feet below.

On the second cast I hook a beautiful, fat- 15” Rainbow. But with an 8‘-3” Fenwick and 10lb test, I may as well been using a bamboo pole and string. I’m seriously considering switching to ultra light gear for the Pilchuck.

Even though this trip was short (½ hour) It was awesome taking a little time to fish on the way home. Now if I can only remember to bring the camera…

Splitshot,
Where abouts along the Chuck? I have tried out this way by I-5 and have wanted to venture into Monroe.

Salmonking:
The Pilchuck empties into the Snohomish River at Snohomish and runs up to Granite Falls and beyond. I've been fishing the Machias area and south of there. No luck tonight.

Sharpshooter:
What's the difference between a Rainbow and an immature Steelhead?

Sorry there Splitshot, got creek and river mixed. Still might make the short trek out that way to wet a line. Any good places for a fly?

Nice report Splitshot. A surefire way to catch a nice 10 lb steelie is to only take your ultralight gear next time. :) PS. the clincher would be leaving the camera at home too. By the laws of fishing, you'd be guarenteed a big one.
I agree, unless you're a noob, I'd say it's easy to distinguish between the cuts and bows....and also immature steelie = rainbow trout.

Historically, the Pilchuck River has produced numerous native Winter steelhead in the 20lb. class. A UL outfit is not a good idea.

Splitshot, dont take it personal. if it was only 15 inches it was probly a cutthroat. Returning steelhead are usually bigger.
