Spend the day bankfishing on the Humptulips. Great day but no fish--either by us or anyone else we observed. Did have two brief hookups (steelheads) and a local old timer who lives close by lost a nice steelhead and foulhooked/lost what looked like a small chum.
Stopped at another site down stream. Nice water but no hookups. Went farther downstreem to check out another site and ran into another local old timer who talked about current fishing as well what once was. According to him, there are very few fish in the river. The previous week he reported the indians did very poorly catching only 3 steelhead which also resulted in them not even putting out the nets this week. He continued by telling us that the hatchery did not even get enough returning steelhead to meet their needs and had to get eggs from the Satsop hatchery.
This information (unverified) put a different slant on our lack of success. Expecting things to pick up, however.
On another note, There had clearly been a LOT of salmon caught in that river. One Access point bar/shallow water was covered with the remains of salmon that had been processed (drift boats?)
