My boy and I shore fished the Green just South of the Auburn golf course. Caught seven humpies, all males, 5 of which we snagged. Largest being about 4 pounds. Nice fighters. I am a bass fisherman, not a salmon fisherman and I don't pretend to be one, so please excuse the following question. But do people really keep those male pinks? They are funny looking fish with them big humps and all. I almost always practice C&R, especially if snagged, but I have seen people out there who keep the salmon regardless if they catch them or snag them. What is everyone else's opinion on this?

i do not eat fish. i practice c&r at almost all times.out of the dozen or so times ive fished in the past 2 months and the over 50 salmon ive caught, ive have kept only 6 hens. i harvested the eggs from them and gave the meat to friends and family that would enjoy some fresh salmon. i never keep a fish i have snagged, just because that is the rules. i dont mind snagging them while i fish cuz sometimes the fight is even better that way and it doesnt break my heart in the least to throw it back.

Well I mainly fished for bass also, but have been obsessed with salmon like you won't believe the past couple of months.. On light tackle, those humpies sure can put a bend in your rod and make your reel sing. I believe you can only keep a fish if the hook is gill plate forward, if not, then it has to be released.. You should bring this topic up in the forum, we have plenty of smart anglers that will put their 2cents in.

Thanks for your comments spliff721 and jens, i like the nickname spliff by the way, ha ha. Anyhow, I have read through the regs and realize that it's probably somewhat a grey area, just curious as to others opinioins. I may raise it in the forum, good idea. Jens, I will agree about the fight with them humpies, it is fun. I use my bass outfit to fish them. I have spinning rods and reels, but find it's more fun on my bass outfit. Plus, I know my Curado and CarrotStix can handle the fight, not sure my line can but at least my equipment can.

My son landed his 10lb native king on my bass rod- 7ft and 8lb test. I like the sensitivity of my bass/trout rod. I'd probably have lost my pig from sunday if I were using it though.
