After hearing that the flows were down, I made my first trip to the Spokane River. Fished off Riverside and below the T.J. Menoch (sp) Bridge. While still somewhat high, the river is beginning to get some definition. I needed an extra split shot or two than I normally use this time of year. Caddis hatches, while not prolific, were constant. I managed six rainbows hook-ups while fishing caddis pupa and soft hackle pt patterns. Four fish to net ran 12-14". Two larger fish in the 16-18" range immediately hit fast water and snapped me off in mid-air. Fish seemed to be dispersed. If a hole gave up a fish, that was the only one it gave up. Three whitefish and a squaw fish added to the action. Dozens of rafters and tubers couldn't detract from my first river trip of the year......the water was oh so cold, even through my waders, and felt awesome on a warm summer day. If only it was easier to wade!
