Went on a guided trip for two days on the Lower Quinault river this weekend with my brother-in-law, his brother, and father and several others. Our guide was Benny Benevidas. Saturday was a great day on the river. We started out casting Blue Fox spinners sizes 3 to 6, which resulted in three nice Steelies to the boat. We were casting out, letting the lure sink slightly, and using a very slow steady retrieve with occasional pops of the rod tip. We then switched to drifting sand shrimp and picked-up two more fish between me, my brother-in-law, and our guide. The biggest fish of the day was about 15 pounds, which was landed on my brother-in-law's fifth cast of the day.
Sunday however, was not a great day. The river had dropped about six inches over the night. We fished from about 6:40 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and only managed 1 Steelhead in the 2 to 4 pound range. Nevertheless, the river was beautiful, the guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the company could not be beat. I would definitely go back. Just might wait until a little later in the year and go in October when, according to our guide, the big salmon are thick in the river.
