Took my brother and the kids out to try our luck at the hatchery chinook in the south sound. Full disclaimer, this was my first attempt at this type of fishing so wasn't expecting too much luck. We stopped by Cabelas the day prior to pick up some supplies. We decided on mooching rigs with herring and various jigs (Point Wilson Dart and Crippled Herring). We were on the water about 1 pm and the tide was still coming in pretty strong. So we tried drifting a little but were just moving too fast. So we anchored up right on on the deep side of the shelf there and let down some mooching rigs behind 4 oz banana sinkers. We were using red label herring. Bait wasn't in the water long before both my daughter (almost 6) and I both had bites. Turned out to be a dogfish which had both our baits in its mouth. Landed that one which was about 36 inches long and recovered our hooks. Re-baited my daughter's line, let it out till it hit bottom and then reeled back in a few cranks. Almost immediately she gets another hit. This one is stronger and pulling differently. Turned out to be about a 10 pound king (guessing at the weight because I didn't have a functioning scale). It was 28 inches long and took about 10 minutes or so to land. Sadly it was a wild fish and had to be returned without any photos taken. That was the only salmon we caught. Caught probably 10 dogfish mooching cut plug herring, and probably lost at least that many more due to cut leaders. Stayed out till about 6 before calling it a day. We tried jigging near the green marker on the slack tide too, but didn't have much luck at that either (if you don't count a sculpin and a small sole). Saw a few salmon caught by the trollers with downriggers but even those guys told us it had been slow. Beautiful day otherwise, and watching the Thunderbirds do their thing up at the air show was icing on the cake.
