This is a 3 day report, and should have been a 4 day report but after reading the projected weather we decided to not he'd up to fish on Thursday because of what we they said the weather was going to do. I knew better not to listen to the weather man because their predictions are right 50% of the time. So I woke up Thursday and called my buddy who lives in port Angeles and fishes up there for a more accurate report. Lets say I was heading to port Angeles at noon on Thursday instead of Friday. So we got up on Friday and headed to the boat launch at 4am to launch the boat, I had pre arranged moorage for 3days because of the up coming derby. We got out to the spot I wanted to fish started our drift according to what the tide was doing. Since there wasn't much wiind the bounce was good and consistent , sometime I had to rock the boat so I could get the rods to do their thing. The dog fish was active on Friday so we had to keep an eye out for them and they kept us busy, is quite a workout to reel up from 260 ft just for those bait stealing dogs fish. We got one fish on Friday before the wind picked up and it was a mad dash back to the launch around 11am. Jakes dad was going to join us Saturday for his first halibut trip and derby, so no I had 2 new people. We left at 4am on Saturday along with all the other people with hopes of ending up in the derby board. The Rookie on the boat ends up on the boat ends up on the derby boar at 12th on Saturday, even though I got a fish too it wouldn't stay on the board. At the end if the derby Steve fish ended up 18th, we had 4 fish in 3 days and lost 3. The trip was fun and our reward was good, the 3 was split of fish was well worth it. The fish I got on Friday would have pt me in the top 10 but the real fun is in the hunt and to consistently catch fish. I am thankful for all the lessons from my buddy, the derby officials have gotten to know me and always ask how I did eveyday. Now I am ready for my fishing trip to Alaska, to put some sockeye in the freezer.
