I got to fish today with my friends Robbie and Rseas and as a bonus we got to try out one of the Life Proof Boats , the 21 foot run about model. Well, by “try out” I should say we got to go along as passengers. Micah Bowers of Life Proof Boats was along as our driver and went over the various features of the boat, which are considerable. But first to the fishing…

With the blackmouth mostly closed down I figured we could hit hoodsport for some chum action. High tide was 2pm so after an interesting tour of the Life Proof Boats factory we drove over to Hoodsport and launched. The first warning bells we noticed were no fish jumping anywhere to be seen. Hmmm, curious. We scooted over to the hatchery and were greeted by no boats anchored up and just a few shore anglers at 10am. We did see one of the bankies catch a chum on a herring under a float, but soon after all the bankies left. Meanwhile, we were casting jigs with prawms, anchovies, and corkies. And getting no takers – really odd I thought. Again, no signs of life save a few chum swimming around on their final legs. The netting schedule is Tues and Thurs, so that shouldn’t have been an issue. We pounded the water for a couple hours, and then decided to slowly motor around and see what was up.

What was up was absolutely no fish did we see cruising or scare up. Meanwhile, the bottom was covered with chum, bellies slit open for the eggs. A sad sight to see, one that I thought was not going to be continued due to concerns about oxygen levels in the canal, but I guess that was a onetime thing? Anyway, after seeing the sterile environment we decided to run down to the Potlach hatchery. A quick, smooth ride later we saw more of the same, and again, no fish. Being that it was cold and high tide with no action, we decided to call it a day.

My best guess is the run is over, or at the least in the last few days. I was obviously off in my timing. Looking back at the last time I fished Hoodsport, 2011, we slayed them on November 7th. So the one saving grace in getting skunked is I now have my two reports to remind me when to and when to not fish the hatchery.
