After spending Sat and Sun in the boat with the wife. Today, I am back to Beach Coho fly fishing. Armed with the fly I tied and caught my first beach Coho limit on the following day.
It was 7am, a later start than I had planned. The beach was already packed with the local regulars. Although, the guy I fished next to, was from Maryland! Turns out he was from here, moved away in 2009, and recently moved back to Seattle. He had beach fished for many years previous to 09.
This being my first year of beach fishing, and beginning that quest with a fly rod. I felt like I had left a bunch of years behind me, wishing I had known earlier, that the beach fishing thing was an option for catching, and not just fishing.
For many years, I had seen the beach fishing guys, while I fished from a boat. But sermized the fish catching odds were slim to none from the beach. Many years earlier was the first time I noticed fishermen on the beach, then the sightings would be 5 to 6 at the most. Today there were 12, and as many as 20 sighted on a weekend day this year.
I hook and loose a fish that would not reach 18". Feller to my right hooks, and lands a dandy........7-8lb fish. The largest this season.
Another fish, up the beach from me, was seen caught and released.
Yet another fish was caught by a gear guy. Fish I.D. was performed by a fly guy, and released due to uncertainty of catching a Pink or a Blackmouth.
I gave this a 3 for hooking up on a self tied fly, and riding the high of the first beach caught Coho limit a few days earlier.
