I launched the boat and motored out, and noticed something wasn't right. There were only 6 of our 8 pots and were set in a different location. We got nothing besides seaweed. On July fifth we limited out at 20 crab, and it was just down-right depressing that we didn't get anything today and are missing two pots.

That sucks! Its getting so you dont dare leave your pots to soak unless you stay right with them.

Sorry to hear that happen. I have never tried crabbing but plan on it this year sounds like I need to baby sit them. What a shame I hope they catch the guy. Sounds like you did very well the day prior great job!

I got my limit on the opener and re-baited the pots and put them down to check the next morning at about 5:00PM. The next morning I went out and had one pot stolen and the other one completely cleaned out. This is my 5th year of crabbing in Commencement Bay and it is the first time some stupid d*** head stole my one of my pots. It is very depressing to kayak out to check your pots only to have one stolen. Just take the crab and leave my pot. Why steal the WHOLE crab pot?!!! It just irks me that someone does this. There is enough out there for everyone. Hopefully someone catches the jerk wagon that is doing this. WDFW nailed a huge illegal crabbing ring last year so maybe they will again this year. Selling crab out the back door of a restaurant...What a joke.

I think some are not stealing the pot they just don't care where they dump them and put them too deep after stealing the crab. I have snagged a pot out too deep with my down rigger. I always stay around when I put my pots down. I would like to put them out over night but don't want to go thru the pain I hear other people having.

I have also snagged a derelict pot on my down rigger while trolling for salmon in the bay. It was not properly weighted. I'm sure there are some crab thieves out there, but if your pots are not properly weighted and you leave them through a major tide the current may move them and if it moves them to a spot that's deeper then the length of your rope you won't find the float when you go back for them. Can also happen if there is a lot of kelp or eel grass in the area to foul/drag your lines. If you haven't done so already, add maybe 5-10 pounds of pot weights to the bottom of your pots. Won't stop any thieves, but may prevent your pots from getting dislodged by the current.
