Back at it again, striding the rocky shores of Port Susan's lively waters. The wind was but a gentle breeze and the sun shone bright. Very pleasant day indeed.

The fishing? Definitely not the fastest. I caught one smallish, yet still beautiful Cutt a couple hours in. Saw him follow my fly in and make a couple missed passes before committing fully. Still, my first Cutthroat in the salt- you gotta start somewhere. Also, a small sculpin and a seaperch accompanied the Cutt as other catches of the day. Other than that, I saw no other trout jump or surface. But I did see one underneath the surface......

Every time I go out I learn new things, such as maybe don't wade out so far into the water at first. I was wading in water under a foot deep, covering water, searching for fish. I always keep my eye out for structure that might hold fish, and while glancing around, I see a log lying to my side about ten feet away from me. But then it moved.

It sprouted fins and a powerful tail and suddenly turned into a 30 inch Dolly, spooked by my movement. Blown opportunity there. Needless to say, the bright sunshine and the relative position of the fish to the shore would have made it difficult to present to anyway, but still. Lesson learned.

On a last positive note, I discovered what I was doing wrong in my casting and adjusted my backcast accordingly. Now I can sling flies heavenly distances and with greater precision. Hopefully there'll be more fish around next time.

What weight rod are you using if I shall ask? I'm must getting started myself and got around to buying some salt water flies. Guy at the store is trying to sell me on the idea of a 8 weight and I can see the reasoning behind it if the bigger boys and girls are running in the area...

@Gonefishing most guys use a 5 or 6wt, I personally have a 5wt and it is a blast. 30 inch dollies are not very common, but there are some good fish around. Most are still 12-18 in, so a 5or 6 wt is probably better. However, using an 8wt is possible and adds versatility if you have any plans of salmon fishing on the fly.
@cielowalker38 perhaps it is a coho, I didn't hold it too long to really examine it, nor am I an expert in saltwater fish ID. It is definitely possible.

I have a fly pole but never learned to fly fish. Ugh *lol* Every other kind of pole gets used though :)
