On Tuesday I was there from 7-8 pm. I caught a sculpin. No other bites.
On Wednesday I was there from 7-8 pm. There were no bites.
So on Friday I was forced to take an unpaid day off from work, so I had line in water by 7:05 am. In the 7:00 hour I caught .. a crab. In the 8:00 hour I had one bite, not a salmon, some bottomfish for sure. So then the 9:00 hour was more productive - I caught another crab and 2 sculpins. There were no bites in the 10:00 hour. Then in the 11:00 hour I caught what I call a flounder, but it looks like what the regs book calls a sole. I left in defeat and dismay after 5 hours or so.
It is hard to find a really comprehensive shore fishing guide, so let me help out anyone thinking of trying it:
If your bobber slowly sinks into the water, you're not snagged on the bottom - it's a crab stealing your bait and there's no way you can catch a fish.
If your bobber is steadily drifting, and stops? You're not snagged, it's a crab stealing your bait and there's no way you can catch a fish.
If your bobber rides low in the water, or cuts through the top of higher waves instead of going over, you didn't pick up seaweed - it's a crab stealing your bait and there's no way you can catch a fish.
If your bobber does anything out of the ordinary or just looks funny - it's a crab stealing your bait and there's no way you can catch a fish.
If your bobber does none of this and acts totally normally? It tangled on your cast and there's no way you can catch a fish. Sometimes a seagull will be helpful and hover over your bobber as if it's about to land, to confirm the tangle.
One of those 5 items covers 95% of your casts.
It was a sad, sad morning. I really had my hopes up. I was so excited to be able to fish for salmon, as I dont have a boat. Alas, while I cannot say I got skunked as I did catch 3 "fish", it was certainly not the result I had been day dreaming about for 2 days.
