Danny and I had a rare 2 days off in a row. So we decided to take a small trip to ilwaco and fish for coho off of the north jetty. North jetty is located in Cape Disappointment state park so you will need a discover pass. We got to spend friday and saturday trying to figure out the ins and outs of the fishery. I highly suggest giving it a try before the coho stop running. Fish action can be fast and furious! Anywhere along the jetty will produce fish. The fish move along the jetty in schools so when you see people down the jetty hooking up you know your turn is coming. Most folks are casting spinners. A mepps flying-C 7/8 in pink or chartreuse to be exact. Pink seemed to be the preferred color by the fish. A slow retrieve seemed to produce the most strikes for me. Many other fishermen are using floats and herring or anchovy. Fish your bait 5 to 8 feet down. This method would sometimes out produce the spinners. Coho schools would come through most consistently hour before and after high and low slack. Use a longer rod 9+ medium or medium heavy. These fish will jump constantly and with a more limber rod you will lose a lot less. Unfortunately I learned this the hard way and ended up losing far to many beautiful fish! Not to mention you want to be able to get these fish in fairly fast as you usually have a sealion or two waiting just outside casting distance. Watch out for the park rangers there are far too many of them and they love writing tickets. We saw many angry anglers leaving with tickets. They were writing tickets to people parking in certain areas even though they had no signs or cones out that say no parking they were also writing speeding tickets. We got a warning for our discover pass being faded, and even though it expires on the 18th we have to get a replacement and send them proof of a replacement card or else get fined 99$ Its the first time I have ever seen park rangers enjoying ruining peoples vacations.

My wife and I used to do this fishery back in the early 90s, exactly as you described. Lot's of fun and good fishing for those cohos. I used float and herring. Sorry to hear about the heavy-handed enforcement.

Yeah, I was there twice this year and both days the park ranger was going from car to car writing violation tickets. I got a warning for not having my license number on my discover pass. Had to take my pass to the office to show proof that it was put in to avoid the $99 ticket. They do not play around there at Cape Disappointment State Park.
