Decided to go hunting for Dungeness again! A friend and I loaded up the boat and made our way to Salsbury Point Park. We launched close to 3PM. We made our way over to the waters off of the Shine Tidelands State Park which is just north of the Hood Canal Bridge.
There was some crab gear in the water but nothing too drastic. Between my friend and I, we had 3 crab traps. All 3 were baited with some Butter Clams in a bait cylinder, a Tilapia hanging in the middle and some herring in a bait bag.
The first pot (My Friend's) went in the water at 4PM in about 75 feet of water. My first trap went in about the same depth. My last trap has 150ft of line and we put that in 130ft. We gave the traps 3 hours to soak while we fished a little bit and just cruised around Bywater Bay, Hood Head and Point Hannon (Thar be a drift wood Sea Serpent here if ye look!).
It was getting chilly even though it was roasting on land. Note to self, "Bring a jacket and have sweatpants if you wear shorts." We pulled my friends trap first at around 7pm. He actually said, "Man this thing is heavy!" Once he got the trap to the surface we could see why. He limited out on that single pull. He had exactly 5 keeper males and a smattering of smaller males and some females.
Next we pulled my 75 ft trap. It had 3 good sized keeper Dungees, some small males and some females. It also had one Red Rock crab that was a keeper.
My last trap was the 130ft on. It only had 3 Red Rock crb in it but all 3 were keeper sized.

So the total for a 3 hour soak on 3 traps was 8 Dungeness and 4 Red Rock. Pretty good haul I would say. If we got there earlier and set the traps twice I am sure we would have both limited on the Dungees!
