Took the family out for a day on the water and to try my luck at getting some Dungeness Crab. A friend of mine mentioned that he has had real good luck up in northern Port Madison waters.
We launched from a private boat ramp up in Miller Bay ($5 and almost no traffic). The first thing we noticed upon getting to the waters off Indianola was the sheer amount of crab gear in the water. I thought to myself, "Yep there must be crab here!"
We set two crab traps baited with butter clams, a hanging tilapia and some herring in a bait bag. One trap was set in about 70 ft of water and the other in 130ft. We gave them 4 hours to soak. I have to say that there were quite a few crab in both traps. The only problem is that they were almost all female ot too small to keep.
We did end up with two keepers. I'm not sure where all the big boys were but I suspect the all the crab gear might have something to do with it. Maybe it was just bad luck.
