A friend and I set out for some crab from Joemma Beach on Saturday 21 Jun 2014. We were in my 14 ft Starcraft with 20hp outboard. High Tide was at 2:44 PM and we launched close to 12:30. We were using Danielson $20 24 inch fold up crab traps.
For bait we were running 2 different set ups. For my 2 traps, I was using some shucked butter clams in a cylindrical bait holder, some Herring in a bait bag and a cheap Tilapia from Safeway dangling between the two. My buddy only had a bait cage for each of his traps. He used a can of Purina dog food with holes punched in it and a can of partially opened herring and some shucked butter clams for good measure..
Our first pot was in the water at 1:00. We set it in about 70 ft of water about 1000ft south of the Joemma Docks. We were pretty close to even with the bottom of Whitman Cove. The next trap went in about 50ft of water and about 500ft south of the first trap. The next 2 traps were set in 50-70 ft of water another 1000 ft or so south of the first 2.
We let the traps soak for 2 hours. On the first pull the first trap with the Tilapia had several crab in it. 2 keeper Red Rock crabs and several too small to keep. No dungies. The second trap (dog food) had a few small crab but no keepers. The third trap (tilapia) had several crab with 2 keeper Red Rock. A few small dungies in this pull but no keeper size. The fourth trap (dog food) had a few small and one keeper Red Rock.
So basically 2-0-2-1.
We reset the traps and fished a little more and pulled the traps again after 2 hours. We got 4-0-2-0 Red Rock keepers. In the third there were 2 nice sized female dungies but no keeper males.
We got back to the house, invited some friends over and had a Crab Boil. Good times, good friends, good crab!
This is my first report. Let me know if it is too terrible format wise.
