Friend and colleague Brent made his first trip to Seattle and he enjoys fishing so FIsh Princess and I treated him to a half day fishing trip on the sound...and wat a treat it was!

Thankfully the fish were about as cooperative as possible, so we had a blast.

Launched at Shilshole around 0550 and headed north past the green can to launch a crab pot on the way out to go fishing. Dropped in 120' of water baited with fresh pink salmon carcass soaked in the pink crab attractant.

Headed further north as the tide was incoming. Finally got just north of the line of boats on the troll here and started setting-up our tackle. First rod to fish was rigged with a pink and silver Delta Diver, about 5' of leader and fresh plug cut herring. Ran it out about 30' and set it in the middle rod holder. Before I could even get another rod rigged we had our first take down, however, this one proved to be a drive-by. Rebaited and reset this rig fishing and next rod was terminated with a purple haze Hot Spot flasher and a purple haze hoochie over top of a needlefish purple haze ace hi fly and baited with a purple Fire Brine cured herring teaser strip. This was fished of the port side downrigger with a 35' set back starting at 50' of cable. Third rod was rigged with a red racer flasher and green hoochie tipped with a chartreuse Fire Brine cured herring teaser strip.

We had pretty constant action throughout the morning and got Brent into a fish pretty quickly. Just after I got the last rod fishing I checked out the purple haze pole and saw a faint bounce to the tip. Having already had one shaker c & r I figured we had another one on the line so I pop it off the downrigger and hand off to Brnet to reel in. But it's not a shaker and he ends-up with about a 4 pound pink. Next fish to hit takes down the Delta Diver hard and I hand of to the Fish Princess and it is a sreaming coho that literally jumps about 20 times and finally breaks the leader right between the top and bottom hooks and right at the boat.

We enjoyed a breakfast of smoked pink courtesy of the Fish Princess' Saturday catch and soon got another take down. This time at was about a 8 pound hatchery king that we had to release (shedding a small tear). Then Brent got into a nice coho and we boated tis one successfully. Closed out the fishing day with a nice fat 5 pound pink on the pruple rig at about 75' and I thought I was into another coho the way it was pulling line.

Final tally for the day was 3 pinks and one coho kept. 1 coho lost at the boat and one hatchery king c & r. with 3 or 4 other drive bys and a couple of shakers c & r (including one with a couple of seal incisor holes in its back). Both the Delta Diver and purple haze rigs produced multiple fish with the purple haze producing the most hook-ups overall.

Pulled our crab pot and had one legal size hard shel but it was female so it went back in. Either one of my doors was open or someone else pulled my pot becuase the carcass was picked entirely clean (more then one crab could have done).

All-in a great day with fish in the box and constant action. Nice to have one of these banner days, especially with kids and guests aboard!

Good luck and tight lines to all!

Mr Dawg, how far North of the green before starting to fish? Stay North of the can the entire time? `Many crab pot buoys out there? 120ft, when pulling, the Princess is good for 10 or 15 ft of that, isn't she?

Thanks Mike! I have a photo to add to this post. Can I send to you for inclusion? If so, please PM an address for delivery.

Moto - I'd say we started maybe .25 miles north and just west of green can. DId not stay north of green can, tide was incoming most of the time we fished so we trolled south all the way to Elliott Bay with one small circuit to stay on a school being worked by many boats just off West Pt. A few other crab buoys out there and we put the pot deep on a tip that there were still some crab out deeper. Princess doesn't have the upper body strength for hauling pots yet, but she loves to eat crab and she's good about helping with bait and grabbing the buoys while I navigate.
