Fun weekend with the Bellingham Salmon Derby. Landed two decent Chinook, one 13 pounds and one at 16.94 (weighed in). Both fish were fantastic fights. The smaller one made a run skipping on top of the water for about 75ft almost like a marlin would. My line was so far behind it by the time it slowed down I thought for sure he'd come off with the barbless hook. I think the breakaway flasher I was using really enhances the fight. We lost one more nice fish and had a great take down that didn't stick... and plenty of dogs, couldn't even keep them off spoons! The fishing was indeed slower, but I'm sure guys got on top of the fish somewhere in the islands where it was a bit more consistent... we just didn't want to spend the gas money chasing them :) I caught my two on a small white spoon behind my red racer flasher and the other on an ace high fly shoved into a natural white hoochie rig tipped with a herring strip. My dad lost a great fish on an ancient lure he pulled out of a tackle box he was given. Sadly, he didn't check the condition of the swivel attached to it and the fish broke off, taking this one of a kind lure with it. The other hit was on an irish flag coho killer. People caught fish on anything and everything this weekend, it was just being the right place at the right time. Something interesting, the two fish we caught had chips in them. Fish and game cut half of their heads off and took them away, but I'm told I'll get an email explaining where the fish came from some day.
